Each week for a year is to share some data with you all about one country in Europe every Monday. The data I will be getting will be from Operation World. Operation World is an evangelical Christian organization that is concerned about fulfilling the Great Commission. They have compiled information on every country in the world and I want to share it with you so you can be praying for Europe specifically. I will also be using a book put out by Greater Europe Mission called “Prayer for the Nations.” Inside the book it has a guide for each country that makes up Greater Europe. There is much more detail then I will share, but if you want a copy of the book for your own prayers please let me know and I will get you one.
If you grew up in the 90’s then the country of Estonia might be familiar to you from the movie Encino Man. Estonia is where the main characters claim their new friend is from instead of admitting that he is a thawed out caveman. If you are also like me, than prior to reading this that may have been your only introduction to this northernmost Baltic state. Hopefully this blog can educate you some as my research has already educated me.
Estonia has only been free to rule themselves since 1994 when Russian troops left. Before Russia, The Danes, Swedes and Germans all rules this country. Even though Estonia has historically been associated with the Lutheran church, over half of the population is non-religious. 13% of the country is part of the Estonian Orthodox Church which has vocally opposed evangelical Christianity. Overall the populations of Christians is decreasing annual by almost 1.4% while the evangelical population is growing slowly.
Please pray for:
the English courses being offered that allow local believers to build relationships with others
the Christian music concerts that are being used as evangelical outreaches.
