Prayer Monday on Tuesday – Bulgaria

I have talked several times about why Europe is in need of missionaries and why I am going over there to do my part, but I thought it might help if I highlighted more specifically what is going on in each of the countries in Europe. So, my plan for the next year is to share some data with you all about one country in Europe every Monday. The data I will be getting will be from Operation World. Operation World is an evangelical Christian organization that is concerned about fulfilling the Great Commission. They have compiled information on every country in the world and I want to share it with you so you can be praying for Europe specifically. I will also be using a book put out by Greater Europe Mission called “Prayer for the Nations.” Inside the book it has a guide for each country that makes up Greater Europe. There is much more detail then I will share, but if you want a copy of the book for your own prayers please let me know and I will get you one.

Most Bulgarians (~80%) claim to be Orthodox Christians, but only 2% of Bulgarians are Evangelicals. With a country of just under 7.5 million the number of evangelicals has increased from .4% in the 80s to 2% now. This has happened during a time where the overall population is actually in decline which makes it even more impressive. There are still a lot of Bulgarians who are clinging to the past and not willing to develop a relationship with Christ.

Pray for:

  • More opportunities for discipleship
  • More workers from within Bulgaria and elsewhere to spread the Gospel
  • For the churches to reach out to their own communities and beyond their borders to people groups (24% of Bulgarians) that have not heard the Gospel

Prayer Monday – Bosnia and Herzegovina

I have talked several times about why Europe is in need of missionaries and why I am going over there to do my part, but I thought it might help if I highlighted more specifically what is going on in each of the countries in Europe. So, my plan for the next year is to share some data with you all about one country in Europe every Monday. The data I will be getting will be from Operation World. Before I start talking about Bosnia and Herzegovina, if you haven’t checked out my last week’s post about Belgium, you should because an actual Belgian friend of mine commented on it and went into some more detail about the state of Belgium Christianity.

Bosnia is a small country about the size of West Virginia and it’s main religion is Muslim with only 40% of the citizens claiming Christianity as their religion. Just over 2,200 people are practicing an evangelical Christianity which amount to about .1% of the total population. Bosnia has been called Europe’s least-evangelized country.

Due to the wars that make-up a lot of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s past, this is a very poor country and a majority of the young people want to leave. This leaves a very bleak outlook for their future. The clashing of the different cultural and religious groups within Bosnia (Muslim, Orthodox and Roman Catholic) also causes strife among it’s people.

Prayer for economic transformation and the youth to rise up and lead this change.

Pray for peace between the three groups of people.

Pray for missionaries to show the hope that is found only through our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer Monday – Belgium

I have talked several times about why Europe is in need of missionaries and why I am going over there to do my part, but I thought it might help if I highlighted more specifically what is going on in each of the countries in Europe. Belgium is a nation of influence. Even though it is only the size of Maryland, it is home to one of the three unofficial capitals of the European Union (Brussels) and the headquarters of NATO. This means many other countries in the world are impacted by citizens in Belgium. With just over 10.5 million people and only 132,569 of them being evangelical Christian, it is very important to be praying for the people of Belgium, just like Americans should be praying for the people in Washington D.C. who impact our daily lives.

Pray for:

  • Churches across Belgium to live out Christian unity personally and in ministry.
  • The means and encouragement for Belgian pastors to continue to serve (including Bible college training like eDOT helps create)
  • Belgians attending evangelical seminaries will continue to be effectively equipped to train others.
  • Believers in the small churches to remain rooted in their faith and courageously reach out in new ways.

Prayer Monday – Azerbaijan

I have talked several times about why Europe is in need of missionaries and why I am going over there to do my part, but I thought it might help if I highlighted more specifically what is going on in each of the countries in Europe. So, my plan for the next year is to share some data with you all about one country in Europe every Monday. The data I will be getting will partially be from Operation World. Azerbaijan is another one of those Asian countries that puts the “er” in Greater Europe Mission. Azerbaijan is a relatively small country straddling the border of Europe and Asia with a total population of just under 9 million. Of those very few are Christians, some estimates are as low as 3,000, others only as high as 10,000.

The biggest prayer need for this country is for the large population percentage that have never heard the Gospel (as high as 63% of the total population). In addition to that the word Christian is often associated with the Russians and Armenians who have been warring with them for their land for quite some time. This negative stereotype of Christianity is a major stumbling block for any Azeri who might be considering professing faith in Christ.

Prayer Monday – Albania

I have talked several times about why Europe is in need of missionaries and why I am going over there to do my part, but I thought it might help if I highlighted more specifically what is going on in each of the countries in Europe. So, my plan for the next year is to share some data with you all about one country in Europe every Monday. The data I will be getting will be from Operation World. Operation World is an evangelical Christian organization that is concerned about fulfilling the Great Commission. They have compiled information on every country in the world and I want to share it with you so you can be praying for Europe specifically.

This week is all about Albania. I’m loving this idea God has put on my heart to share some of the prayer needs for Europe because I get to learn more about these countries too. I am by no means an expert on Europe, especially the geography so this is great! I hope you all enjoy it too.

Albania has a population of 3,169,087 and of those just under 966,000 claim to be Christian, but only 14,466 are Evangelical Christians actively trying to spread the Gospel.

The most pressing prayer that is needed for Albania is for the the continued growth of the evangelical movement. The evangelical movement in Albania is currently growing from its infancy in the 90’s and the number I shared with you is only an estimate since there are not many reliable sources.

Please join me in prayer this week for Albania, that the Albanian’s hearts will see God’s love and want nothing more than to share that with others.

Prayer Monday – Europe

I have talked several times about why Europe is in need of missionaries and why I am going over there to do my part, but I thought it might help if I highlighted more specifically what is going on in each of the countries in Europe. So, my plan for the next year is to share some data with you all about one country in Europe every Monday. The data I will be getting will be from Operation World. Operation World is an evangelical Christian organization that is concerned about fulfilling the Great Commission. They have compiled information on every country in the world and I want to share it with you so you can be praying for Europe specifically.

For the first Prayer Monday I wanted to discuss Europe as a continent before we get into detail about each individual country.

Europe has a population of 732,758,546 and of those 71% claim to be Christian, but only 2.5% of the Christians are evangelical (over 20% in North America). Operation World defines evangelicals as those who adhere to all four of the following:

  • The Lord Jesus Christ as the sole source of salvation through faith in Him, as validated by His crucifixion and resurrection.
  • Personal faith and conversion with regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
  • Recognition of the inspired Word of God as the ultimate basis and authority for faith and Christian living.
  • Commitment to biblical witness, evangelism and mission that brings others to faith in Christ.

Evangelicals are the ones who are actively reaching out to others to help them see that they need a relationship in Christ while the other people who claim to be Christian might go to church once or twice a year but think of themselves as Christians. The 2.5% number is the one you may have heard me use to discuss the Christians in Europe.

Some prayers that you could pray this week for Europe are:

  • Evangelicals will continue to grow in number and strength
  • The influx of non-Christians into Europe can be used to reach a wider range of people than ever before
  • The economical and political upheaval that has been happening lately will cause people to realize their need for Christ

Please join me in prayer for the people of Europe. Next week I will highlight Albania.
